Gangubai Kathiawadi- Poster

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is back with another flawless piece of excellence and cinematic grandeur. The film is loosely based on the true story of Gangubai Harjivandas, whose life was documented in a chapter of the book ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’ written by S. Hussain Zaidi.

SLB sticks to his style of filmmaking and blends in everything right from drama, emotions, music, dance and beautifully designed sets. While SLB’s direction is perfect, this film is solely carried by Alia Bhatt on her shoulders. She is exceptionally well as Gangubai. She makes you feel the pain and agony while also making you empathize. She smoothly pulls off the Gujarati accent and gives you goosebumps in the scenes she screams. Alia is one of the most versatile actor Bollywood has and she only testaments this fact with Gangubai Kathiawadi.

The others in the ensemble including Vijay Raaz, Seema Pawah and Shantanu Maheshwari are commendable in their bit. Ajay Devgn has a fantastic cameo appearance as he plays the role of Rahim Lala, character based on the real life Karim Lala who was Gangubai’s sworn brother. His small bit only keeps you wanting for more and reminds you of his portrayal in ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbai’.

Apart from the performances, what makes this film so watchable is the fact that it is not made in the typical biographical style. With a very nicely written screenplay and added entertainment quotient, Gangubai Kathiawadi not only hits with feels but also entertain a lot. Only SLB could handle a topic so sensitive with such ease. Though the language gets a little coarse at times but barring this, there are no bold scenes making it a family film. It is also rated UA which means it is unrestricted and everyone can watch it subject to parental guidance for children under the age of 12.

On the whole, Gangubai Kathiawadi is an out and out blockbuster and will cater to the needs of both the massy and classy moviegoers. It is after long that a Bollywood film this satisfactory has hit the cinemas. It will surely bring cheer to the very stagnant box office.
