RRR Movie Poster

There are massy films like Bachchan Pandey, Satyameva Jayate, Dabang etc. And then, there are massy films with a class. SS Rajamouli’s films fall under this category. It not only caters to the mass but also the niche cinema goers who prefer watching classy cinema.

After a long haul since Bahubali, SS Rajamouli is back and how! A magnum opus just like Bahubali, Rajamouli has brought magnificently to screen this period drama story blending grand sets, stunning visuals, power-packed action, dance, drama and a starry ensemble. He has proven that he is the king of grand storytelling.

The story is pretty predictable and straightforward. It is written by KV Vijyendra Prasad and is slightly inspired by the events that happened around and in the lives of Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem who were Telugu tribal revolutionaries and freedom fighters. The screenplay, written by Rajamouli again is very engaging and neat.

In the quest of portrayal, the play loses logic quite often. But you don’t watch a Rajamouli film or perhaps, South Indian cinema for logic. The journey from the start to the climax is enjoyable with only a few boring bits.

Though there are some overdone and pretty animated sequences which look very outlandish, the Special Effects and VFX are very good, overall. They translate into extraordinary visuals and are very nice to watch on the big screen. The Production Design by Sabu Cyril is superb. Cyril is one of the best designers India has and his good work is clearly visible in the grand, spectacular sets that he designs. This is even more notable in the palace and jungle sequences as well as the songs.

The soundtrack of the film is average unlike Pushpa’s album that became a party playlist. It has only a few memorable tracks. Special mention to- Nacho Nacho. This song, shot in Ukraine, will make you get up from your seats and dance. You cannot just resist seeing the lead duo’s commendable dance moves. It is choreographed by filmfare award winning choreographer, Prem Rakshith. Having said this, the BGM is decent and above average.

On the performance front, Jr. NTR and Ram Charan are fantastic in their characters. More than just delivering dialogues, their win this time was in how they could bring the character alive visually. Their body language, dance and the effort put in the stunts and action say it all! They are in all true senses, the Heroes! Alia Bhatt hardly has any space to be making any difference whereas Ajay Devgn’s character had a little more room making it an extended cameo. On the whole, this is an out and out Jr. NTR and Ram Charan film. Their fans couldn’t have asked for a better treat.

RRR, though originally made in Telugu has been released as a Pan India film in India and has also been released globally, receiving immense praise from international audiences as well. I saw the film in Hindi and the Hindi version has been dubbed by Jr NTR and Ram Charam themselves. Trivia- if you wait till the credits, you’ll find a special appearance of SS Rajamouli himself in the song, Sholay. Another trivia- RRR is the second most expensive Indian film after 2.0. It is made on a budget of Rs. 550 crores while 2.0 was made on a budget of Rs. 575 crores. On its opening day, RRR broke all records becoming the highest opening day grosser with a worldwide collection of approx. Rs. 270 crores.

On the whole, this film is what the Indian audiences look for in a movie. Entertainment. If you liked Pushpa, you’ll definitely like this too. And, if you want to come out of the theatre rejoiced, then this is your film. A complete family entertainer, your money won’t go in vain.
