Dobaaraa
Bollywood just got a ‘Doctor Strange’ equivalent and it is a must-watch! Time travel, alternate universe, and an intriguing plot – all packed in this mystery thriller! Taapsee outshines as always and Anurag Kashyap is capable of creating absolutely anything!
Dobaaraa, stylised as 2:12, is a sci-fi mystery film adapted from a 2018 Spanish film Mirage. Starring Taapsee Pannu & Pavail Gulati and directed by the veteran, Anurag Kashyap, it revolves around the story of a women who gets transported to an alternate reality. What lies ahead is a maze and an edge-of-the seat mystery film.
The plot of the film is so complicated and confusing that only a director like Anurag Kashyap could have handled it. Anurag Kashyap has gone all out and is experimenting beyond his peculiar style. He gave us an amazing romantic movie in 2018, Manmarziyan. Choked, a drama film in 2020 and now, Dobaara a sci-fi mystery.
The screenplay is not clean. For a confusing film like this, the screenplay should have been clearer. However, while there are flaws in the screenplay, Anurag Kashyap has his grip very well over the story as well as the actors. He is able to pull off an engaging translation. There are a lot of layers, the explanations are thoroughly given.
Hardly have Bollywood sci-fi films performed at the box-office. People in India will only respect Marvel’s imagination. However, this time, Bollywood has actually attempted something exactly like Doctor Strange. And it has actually been able to achieve it. Dobaaraa is not only nicely made but it also manages to entertain a lot as it is fast, and thrilling.
Coming to the performance, Taapsee is again at her best. She has done better films, but this one is good too. Her performance in Dobaara will remind you a lot of her character in Looop Lapeta. In fact, Looop Lapeta, that streamed on Netflix as an original was also a sci-fi drama based on the concept of time loop. So, Taapsee at times seems a little monotonous. Pavail Gulati reunites with Taapsee again after Thappad and he is great with his bit. The others in the ensemble are great as well. Especially, Saswata Chatterjee who played the very famous character of Bob Biswas in the Vidya Balan starrer Kahaani, is scary to watch in Dobaaraa too.
On the technical front, the camera work, editing and production design is up to the mark. Anurag Kashyap’s frequent collaborator, Sylvester Fonseca has done the cinematography. They had previously worked on Choked. The cinematography of Dobaara is great!
On the whole, Dobaaraa is a great film and should definitely be watched in the theatres. This film will surely go unnoticed amidst the whole Boycott Bollywood trend on the internet. But please let not this happen, Bollywood seriously has great actors and directors who are trying to put out Hollywood level content out there and we should watch this rather than genuinely poor massy movies.
