Freddy
Freddy, an otherwise paper-thin crime-thriller with the same old unrequited-love-revenge-saga is elated by Kartik Aaryan’s exemplary and career-best performance. He should be your only reason to watch this film.
Freddy, directed by Shashanka Ghosh who has films like Veere Di Wedding and Khubsoorat to his credits, comes up with a dark thriller with the revenge angle. Starring Kartik Aaryan as Freddy, the film revolves around a sweet, shy and very innocent Parsi dentist of Bombay who is in his late thirties and with a dead love-life. He gets cheated upon by the girl who he thought will be his soulmate. How far will he go to take a revenge?
The plot is very predictable and paper-thin. It has minimum elements of thrills or even twists in the plot. The makers have banked solely on great performances to deliver them a good product. And this actually does happen. What makes Freddy so watchable is the performances. Kartik Aaryan is excellent as the ‘Parsi Guy,’ Dr. Freddy Ginwala and nails everything right from the accent, dialogue delivery and even the dentistry. He also transitions smoothly from sweet to terrifyingly vicious when the time comes. This just shows how Kartik Aaryan is growing as an actor. I liked this portrayal better than his performance in Bhool Bhulaiya 2, Dhamaka and even Love Aaj Kal 2. Apart from Kartik, special mention to Alaya F. who is another emerging actor with great potential. She plays her part very perfectly.
On the technical front, the screenplay including the dialogues and the direction is decent. Just that the script is done to death and lacks novelty. Also, the makers aren’t able to thrill as much as they intended to. Even if the thrill factor was taken under control, it would have been even better. However, commendable production design and art direction along with great cinematography and editing. The Parsi elements have been picked up very nicely. There is hardly any memorable song in the soundtrack or even the BGM isn’t impactful. The length is just 2 hours but can seem little long and stretched at times.
On the whole, Freddy is great to watch on the small screen at leisure. If you are a Kartik Aaryan fan, you’re in for a treat. That’s that about Freddy. Let me know how you liked it on Instagram @thepopcornunivers.in.
