Looop Lapeta
Looop Lapeta starring Taapsee Pannu and Tahir Raj Bhasin is a fantastic whimsical-thriller filled with really great humour and top-notch cinematography. For those who enjoy off-beat and artsy films, this one is for you!
Looop Lapeta is the official Indian adaptation of the German film, ‘Run Lola Run’ starring Taapsee Pannu and Tahir Raj Bhasin. It revolves around Savi who fights against time to get into a time loop for saving her boy-friend from getting killed.
While I haven’t seen the original film, I can surely say that the adaptation is fairly done. The concept of time and death has been nicely used to lay the Indian version of this story. There are executional glitches but the concept being so different and fresh becomes a great watch. The film sticks to artsy style of storytelling with its core-strength being cinematography. The camera has been so well and so cleanly used. You wouldn’t have seen a cinematography like this in a mainstream Bollywood film for sure. The concept in itself has 3 different versions of the same plot and one can only imagine how difficult it is to pull that off. Apart from this, to be able to experiment with such strange and different shots and angles is commendable. Hats off to Yash Khanna and team!
On the other technical fronts, the editing could have been tighter reducing the length a bit. The runtime of the film is almost 2 hours 20 minutes which seems a tad long given the fact that the story is a repetition of the same plot in 3 different ways. The soundtrack and BGM is decent blending really well with the storyline.
On the performance front, Taapsee and Tahir deserve all the praise. They have balanced a range of different emotions and expressions for the one story in three different ways. Apart from the lead duo, Manik Papneja and Raghav Raj deserve a shout-out for playing ‘Appu-Gappu’ in a hilarious way. Look out for their ‘Lola Cab’ monologue which will be so relatable.
Overall, the film is a very entertaining piece of work and will appeal a lot to people who admire art cinema and like off-beat films which experiment with concepts. It will be a fun watch otherwise too on the merits of being funny and uncanny! Looop Lapeta is streaming on Netflix. You can watch the trailer here.
