Roohi

Platform - Theatrical Release Date - 11th March 2021 Review By - Pratik Rathi Tag - Latest Reviews Category - Movie Reviews

Roohi is funny and terrifying in bits and parts mostly in the first half and trips on its own writing in the second. Though entertaining, it isn’t able to make an impact and is easily forgettable. Rajkummar Rao’s performance and some giggles are the only reason to watch this horror-comedy!

The makers of Stree are back with another Horror-Comedy starring Rajkummar Rao, Varun Sharma, and Janhavi Kapoor. Roohi is the story of two men who kidnap and get stuck with a woman facing ‘split personality disorder’ making her occasionally turn into a witch (described as ‘Lady Hulk’ in the film). As quirky and interesting as the plot of the film is, it isn’t capable of tickling or chilling you beyond the intermission.

With a terrible screenplay and illogical conclusion, Roohi trips on its own writing and ambition. The first half of the film seemed hopeful and was funny and terrifying in equal parts. However, the second half loses grip over the story and vaporizes to a senseless climax. The screenplay loses continuity quite many times and spreads all over the place. Stree, which was helmed by Raj & DK had a message to give, and it laid benchmarks with its quirky storytelling. But Roohi, directed by Hardik Mehta isn’t able to lay out anything special nor does it make a lasting impact.

What deserves praise is the dialogues and performances. The dialogues are raw and capture the milieu well. The comedy is good and flows naturally. On the performance front, Rajkummar Rao and Varun Sharma are the show stealers. Janhavi Kapoor is terrifying as well!

The film has many flaws and yet, having said this, experiencing Roohi on the big screen after long will surely give you that missing cinema feels and will be an entertaining experience. The sound effects, the grandeur, and the feeling of the story in the cinema hall are different experiences altogether. Roohi being the 1st Big-Banner Bollywood release since the lockdown will give a good kick-start to the Dead Box Office and cinema-goers as well. And if nothing else, Roohi for sure will give you a good amount of laughter!
