Artistically shot, full of aesthetic visuals, and mesmerizing classical music, The Disciple is the study of the psychology of an ‘Indian Classical Music’ devotee and what it takes to follow a traditional path. The film leaves a lot for the viewers to decipher and feels heavier on the brain than the heart.

Heads Up: If you like watching art-cinema or film festival cinema, only then watch this film. It is not what everyone will easily be able to appreciate.

This film studies the psychology and the deep inner human emotions of Sharad Nerulkar, played by Aditya Modak, an ‘Indian Classical Music’ devotee as he takes up the journey of religiously practicing the traditional art which he actually isn’t very good at. The film has a lot of wisdom and takeaways to offer. What it takes to choose the less treaded path, the sacrifices, the dedication, and the sheer amount of discipline that it requires. However, the storyline only focuses on the protagonist without main-framing his relationships with any other characters. So more than a story with a graph, this film turns into a single character study.

The performance by Aditya Modak who is also a classical singer in real life is great. But what deserves praise are the cinematography and the art design. Set in 2006, the film captures the details of that period very aesthetically. Shot beautifully, It is a visual treat as well.

The Disciple is long, very slow-paced, and really heavy on the head. So, if someone is looking for a light watch, this is not the kind of film you’d want to stream. Plus, if you don’t have an ear for classical music, it is a big NO. You know what to expect, if it matches your tastebuds’ seeking, The Disciple is streaming on Netflix as a Netflix Film since 30th April 2021.
