#NoSpoilers
In 2017, Pushkar & Gayatri made what is now a sensational in Tamil Cinema, ‘Vikram Vedha’ starring Vijay Sethupati and R. Madhavan. Remaking the same for the Hindi Audience in the backdrop of North-India, Pushkar-Gayatri ends up doing a perfect job of photocopy. It can be really difficult to remake a perfect movie and a move that can really go wrong and kill the original. However, this isn’t the case with Vikarm Vedha.
Pushkar-Gayatri who wrote and directed the original are the writer-director of the Hindi one too. They have translated the plot amazingly keeping in mind the taste of the other half of the nation and also, fine tuned a lot of their previous desires and “could-have-done” fetishes. Their direction is exceptional and they absolutely know how to bring the best out of everyone. The husband-wife duo’s hold on the complex plot and narrative is strong and they throw a star-studded spectacle on the big-screen.
The best part is how beautifully intense action sequences and noir moments are captured in the backdrop of old Hindi songs and in a very comic way making this one of the best neo-noir action-thriller. Also, the dialogues are very deep and sensibly written with very catchy punch-lines. Without any spoilers, the end is open and will leave you perplexed and contemplating throughout your way back home from the theatres.
Coming to the performances, Saif-Hrithik if not surpass the OG Vikram-Vedha, do complete justice to their roles. Saif who has played a cop previously in Sacred Games does it yet again but in a completely different zone. His character this time is more smart, intuitive and strong. Hrithik Roshan’s versatility is not an unknown fact and he does it yet another time. He has played an antagonist hero in Agneepath previously and pulls off the character of Vedha even more boldly this time. Both the stars speak the UP accent very fluently and deliver their dialogues with charm. It was such a treat to see this pair on screen after their first pairing in ‘Na Tum Jano Na Hum’ in 2002. There could have been no other duo who could have done this part better than Saif-Hrithik. Radhika Apte has limited screen role and performs her bit well.
Shot partly in Lucknow and on recreated sets, the whole vibe of UP is very appropriately captured. The cinematography, production design and editing are bang-on. The details have been well captured and overall, the execution is very nice. The action-sequences are well choreographed and keep you pumped enough. The cherry is the BGM. Not only the main theme but the complete score is very energetic and pulsating.
On the whole, Vikram-Vedha is an out-and-out entertainer that will entertain the mass as well as the class. The story, screenplay, dialogues, visuals, action, thrill…everything add up well to make this a blockbuster. There is no dull moment. This is something that can’t really be compared to the original as the makers are the same and the backdrop changes completely. Even if you have watched the original, you’re sure to love this Bollywood version of Vikram Vedha!
