This remake of Nani’s superhit film, Middle Class Abbayi (MCA) is a slapstick comedy that will entertain the mass and class as well. Definitely not as bad as is being called and will be a good watch especially if you are looking for a light-hearted no brainer.

Nikamma is the official Hindi remake of the 2017 superhit film titled Middle Class Abbayi also commonly known as MCA starring Nani. While the complete film is almost frame to frame replicated as it is, Nikamma takes a different route for the Climax.

Starring Abhimanyu Dassani who made his debut with the 2018 critically lauded film, ‘Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota’, Shilpa Shetty and Shirley Setia, Nikmma is the story of a jobless spoilt brat from a middle-class family who is fed up with his strict sister-in-law and the tight ship that she runs. However, after realizing her sacrifices and value, he stands up to fight against gangsters who are behind their life.

The film is directed by Sabbir Khan and is a slapstick comedy filled with over-the-top action. With some great dialogues, comedy, and along with power packed “South-Indian” style action sequences, Nikamma is a film that will appeal to the mass and also be able to be a good family entertainer. In case you have watched the original MCA, you might enjoy it less owing to repetition. However, if you haven’t watched the original, you’ll like Nikamma given its interesting premise and entertainment quotient.

The comedy is decent with plenty funny punches and so are the dialogues. Abhimanyu Dassani has got great comic timings and is definitely on the way to become Varun Dhwan’s replacement for such melodious comic roles. Also, he is great with action as he is just redoing his bit from ‘Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota’. Shirley has very limited space and she is overdoing it in that bit. Shilpa Shetty is far better in her second role after her big screen comeback in ‘Hungama 2’. She is apparently strict and bossy in her performance and delivers a good act. Special mention to Abhimanyu Singh’s terrific act as the antagonist, Vikramjeet Bisht.

While this film is a frame-to-frame remake, the climax is changed and in my opinion is better than the original. There are many dragged events and a lot of unnecessary emphasis is given to unimportant scenes. It could have been wrapped up 15-20 minutes faster than its runtime.

The soundtrack is average with only the title song ‘Nikamma’ being able to make way to your playlist. The other technical elements including cinematography, action sequences and production design are great.

On the whole, Nikamma is a no-brainer massy entertainer with action, comedy and drama. If you are someone who finds logic in everything and everywhere, it is best you avoid this film. If you are a fan of ‘South-Indian’ action-drama movies and like watching light-hearted slapstick cinema, this one will be your cup of tea. Amidst a pool of so much intense and dark content on the web, Nikamma will be a breath of fresh air and families will have a good laugh together in the theatres.
