Gaslight
Gaslight sticks to the classic formula and is still able to entertain. The setting, tone & visuals along with a career best performance by Sara Ali Khan make this film a great watch!
The daughter of a Royal Family returns home to meet her father after long and to resolve personal conflicts. After reaching, her father isn’t there anymore and she starts investigating his mysterious disappearance. He’s been murdered and everyone in the family is manipulating her views. Gaslight revolves around this whodunit.
While the plot is very predictable, and the movie follows the classic mystery-thriller route, the treatment is what stands out. The overall tone that has been used is very black that makes the movie dark and gives it the depressing feels. It also adds to the horror element that the makers have tried to integrate. The setting and production design is great. While it might get too dark at times, it does work well.
In terms of the performance, this is Sara Ali Khan’s career best for sure. For the first time, watching her isn’t annoying as her character in itself is required to be whimsical and paranoid. Vikrant Massey is a known performer and does very well with his part here. Chitrangada Singh was a good watch after long and was great to see her pull off an intense role.
On the whole, Gaslight is a great quick watch of roughly 1 hour 45 mins. At times, the predictability and the pace might take over the better of it, but you can skip through the dragged parts and enjoy the twist laden climax. Also, watch it for decent performances and the artsy treatment more than anything else.
