Satyaprem Ki Katha
Unlike your next-door romance-drama, Satyaprem Ki Katha is novel and intense. It is able to hit all the right chords while being entertaining and meaningful
Satyaprem Ki Katha, directed by Sameer Vidwans who has a bunch of super-hit Marathi movies to his name and starring Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani in the titular roles, is the story of Satyaprem and Katha whose love story is not unlike a typical Romeo-Juliet story. It has a deeply intense angle that allows the makers to tap on quite a few societal taboos and issue. Giving away anything more about the plot will give away the twist that forms the crux of the movie. So, in the interest of keeping it spoiler free, I won’t discuss the plot any further. Given that the central theme of the film is so novel, Satyaprem Ki Katha is definitely going to be a good watch given that it won’t give you the ‘seen that before’ feels.
The screenplay is imperfect but translates good on the screen. While the transition between many scenes and the jumps between acts seem broken making the narrative slip slightly, it largely looks manageable when seen without nit-picking. The dialogues on the other hand are very maturely written. Set in the city of Ahmedabad, the makers very well dissolve the script in the milieu of the Gujarati city and use it for most of the comic and entertaining moments. This feat is astonishing given that the director comes from a very different domain of filmmaking.
On the performance front, Kartik manages to pull off the innocent and jovial Gujju boy’s role very nicely. However, it is not him who is the show stopper. This time, it is Kiara. She is totally under the skin of her character and makes you connect to Katha. The supporting cast especially Gajraj Rao, Supriya Pathak and Siddharth Randeria do a commendable job.
Technically, the visuals and editing are decent. Being a musical, an important aspect of the film is the soundtrack and background music. And the makers have hit the bull’s eye with this. Aaj Ke Baad, Naseeb Se, Gujju Pataka, Sun Sajani, and the infamous, Pasoori Nu. It has something for everyone.
On the whole, the movie’s intention makes it stands out from being a cliché romance movie. Topped with decent performances and music, it is a definitely a good watch.
