Toofaan

Toofaan is spectacular, entertaining, heart wrenching and thought provoking, all at the same time. It is the kind of film you would want to witness on the big screen. Farhan Akhtar, Mrunal Thakur and Paresh Rawal’s performances are more than enough a reason to be watching this right away.

No matter how clichéd, long, and predictable the film might be, Farhan Akhtar’s splendid performance is heavy enough to carry the entire film on its shoulder. He, as Aziz Ali is so stunning. The way he has pulled off the ‘Tapori’ slang and the way he turns into Boxer Toofaan is amazing to witness. His sweat and hard work are evident in the output. Not just Farhan, Mrunal Thakur, and Paresh Rawal’s performances are beyond words. I was already a fan of Paresh Rawal and Farhan Akhtar and now Mrunal Thakur has made me her fan too! The others in the ensemble are so well cast and deliver exceptionally. Though, I feel Supriya Pathak’s talent was wasted on the little role.

On the writing front, what needs extreme praise are the dialogues. Vijay Maurya is the best dialogue writer that Bollywood has. Every line is so organic and sensibly written with comedy sprinkled neatly. The film is set in Bombay and has been captured beautifully by Jaz Oza. It is visually grand and appealing. The technicalities of Boxing have also been so aptly nailed.

The only hurdle the film trips on is its length, predictability of the plot that at times feels very forcibly written with elements like tragedy added just for the sake of it (spoiler without context). Toofaan is a classic sports-drama with a classic graph. However, it is very well made by ROPM and the performances and innocence of the story stand out so vividly that you’ll love it! And that’s why, keeping things simple and classic always works! The BGM and Soundtrack are underwhelming and could have upscaled the film to another level. The film was made keeping a theatrical release in mind but nevertheless, is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
