Unbelievable
Unbelievable is a Netflix Original Series which is based on true events of serial rape cases in Washington and Colorado states of America.
The series has two timelines. The first one is centered around the life of a teenage girl, Marie, who is accused of lying about being raped. The other follows the investigation of similar crimes headed by two lady detectives who are in the pursuit of finding the rapist. In this course, we are taken through the lives of the victims, the detectives, and the challenges and bureaucracies they face. As the series progresses, these two timelines merge revealing twists and shocking details. Elaborating more on the plot and twists will constitute a spoiler. So, I’ll rather come to the film-making part of the review.
The makers have maintained the pace of the series so well. It moves pretty slowly yet keeps you hooked and thrilled throughout. The screenplay is so well-written and the twists so smartly revealed so as to create the needed impact and give the required message even more strongly. The details have been captured just perfectly. Apart from the central message that it delivers, the series also brings forth this philosophy of how someone with power and authority can choose to take the easy way or work diligently and make the world a better place to live in.
The characters are so well written with layers and emotions. Especially those of the two lead detectives. And on the acting front, Toni Collette and Merritt Wever breathe life to their parts. Kaitlyn Dever is absolutely fantastic as Marie. On the technical front, the cinematography is too good and the editing very crisp.
This series is a must-watch for multiple reasons. It can be a little dark and heavy to finish in a binge session but it is not too long. 8 Episodes of approx. 45 mins each. Take time out and definitely go through it. It is a must-watch!
