KGF: Chapter 2

Bigger, louder and noisier- KGF Chapter 2 is strictly for those who could survive the 1st part in the theatres and for those who actually enjoy massy South Indian Cinema. If you have still not given in to the hype, please refrain doing so.

KGF Poster

KGF: Chapter 2, the second instalment in the KGF franchise picks up the story from where its prequel left it. Rocky has taken over Kolar Gold Fields and is creating a people centric empire at the mines. He is everyone’s king or rather, God. While he does so, new enemies and foes are ready for revenge and greedy to take over KGF.

KGF: Chapter 1, written and directed by Prashanth Neel has been rightly praised for its complex story line with multiple characters. He carries the same forward in the sequel as well. There are new characters, and even more complications. The inter looping of various events and characters always keeps the viewers at the edge of their seats. There is very little predictability of how the events will turn around. The characters of Adheera, Inayat Khalil and Ramika Sen are very nicely built in, in this part.

The plot falters at one point, though. It loses continuity with the love angle. In the prequel, Reena, the love interest of Rocky is shown empathizing and fallen for Rocky. However, this film starts as if nothing in the last part has happened between the two. I was very puzzled by seeing this. Also, worse than this is how this love angle starts with objectifying the heroine. She is called ‘Entertainment’ and is held in captivity without consent. Just another film in which toxic acts of male heroes are normalized. We really need to call such things out and stop letting this happen.

On the acting front, Yash delivers a power-packed performance as expected and makes a solid impact with his entry sequences and action as well. Sanjay Dutt adds the villain vibe to the film which was previously missing. His look and dialogues have been viciously devised too! Srinidhi Shetty fails at her bit. She has a constant clueless face throughout and it is really hard to understand what she is feeling. She has dialogues countable on your fingers, yet doesn’t deliver properly. The repeating actors do their bit well. Raveena Tandon as Ramika Sen is a cherry on the pie. Would love to see more of her onscreen. Prakash Raj remains underutilized.

Coming to the technical front, the production design and art is excellent. The complete KGF town and the details therein are nicely established. The colour palette which is mostly sepia adds the required heat and deserted feel to the plot. The cinematography is nice and notable especially in case of aerial shots and action sequences. The editing is average. The length could have been crisper with a tight cutting of unnecessary flash backs and retelling of the past. There are also more than required black outs which after a point irritate.

If you could bear KGF 1 in the cinema hall, then you have to watch this film. I came under this category. On the other hand, if you are having a major FOMO, and are planning to watch KGF 1 now so that you can watch KGF Chapter 2 in the theatres and post stories on Instagram, this is a suicidal plan. Trust me, peace of mind over everything. If you watch 1, then you can’t skip 2 as you’ll crave for closure. And then when you watch 2, the makers tell you in a wannabe Marvel post-credit sequence that there will be a 3 too. It’s a trap, please beware!!!
