Saas Bahu aur Flamingo
Quirky & dark, this series is unlike what you’ve seen in the Indian web-series space so far. Moreover, the novel female driven concept is elevated by the performances of the lead cast. Show stoppers are Dimple Kapadia & Deepak Dobriyal.
The concept of drug-cartels and crime-thrillers revolving around the same are very overdone in movies and web-series. Netflix’s web-series Narcos is a house-hold name. However, this time Homi Adjania and Maddock Films attempt something very novel, quirky and bold. They have a made a world of crime-drama revolving around a drug-cartel run by women. This matriarch theme makes this otherwise predictable and sluggish web-series a very interesting take.
The writing is decent. The screenplay at times feels a little stretched making the series too long. Could have been easily edited to 45 minutes per episode in length and maybe an episode less than the current tally of 8. The dialogues are raw yet modern at the same time capturing the vibe and milieu of the setting. The series is set in a fictional town of Rural India and the treatment has been worked on in a detailed manner. The action atmosphere is well built by the production design, background music and other rustic elements.
On the performance front, the ladies have out-done themselves. Dimple Kapadia remains the show-stopper with her bold, sassy and intense portrayal of the drug-lord ‘Rani Devi’. Radhika Madan, Angira Dhar and Isha Talwar are great in their respective roles. Two performances that deserve a special mention are – Deepak Dobriyal for playing his part so well and making it intense and vicious. Ashish Verma for adding so much humour through his very off-beat and whimsical character.
On the whole, while the series is mostly predictable and too long to watch, the treatment of the subject with novelty is why it deserves a watch. Also, Homi Adjania and team deserve praise for stepping out miles outside their comfort zone. Heads-up, it has immense gore and dark scenes which doesn’t make it a family watch.
