Thalaivii
Less of Jayalalitha and more of MGR, this film definitely can’t be called as Jayalalitha’s biopic. However, it is an engaging watch and keeps you hooked! Special mention to Arvind Swami. His performance overshadows Kangana’s.
Thalaivii, released as the biopic of Jayalalitha, plots out the life of the celebrated actress turned politician. This film only focuses on the primitive days of Jayalalitha’s life that involved MGR and runs till her becoming the CM. Hence, this is less of Jayalalitha’s independent biopic and more of a political drama involving multiple characters. With Arvind Swami’s outstanding performance overshadowing that of Kangana, Thalaivii doesn’t remain a female-centric film with a female lead either.
On the technical front, this film does well in terms of cinematography and production design. The early 80s is brought to screen very aptly making it a visual treat. Kangana manages to look very much like Jayalalitha and performs decently as well. However, this isn’t her best and a role wherein actors like Vidya Balan would have fit in more ably.
On the whole, Thalaivii will be a great watch for all who are looking for an engaging movie. Even more for those who love political dramas and lastly, for those who are unaware of the behind the scene story of one of the most powerful leaders India has ever seen!
