Axone

Axone is a story about a group of friends from the northeast living in Delhi or rather, trying to live in Delhi. All they want is to celebrate a friend’s wedding sticking to their culture and by making a special dish, Axone (spelled as Akhuni). This film takes you into the lives of these ‘migrants’ and makes you feel what it is to live like them…away from home in a city which is unaccepting. Though the plot covers a sensitive and heavy issue, the film is made in a very light-hearted way and is a quirky yet emotional comedy that will, in the end, make you believe that everything is gonna be alright. This is what is the best thing about the film. It makes you laugh while imparting lessons and opening your eyes all at the same time.

The performance of the ensemble is brilliant. But the acting by Sayani Gupta is way par excellence. She is just too good playing Upasana. The way she is smoothly delivering dialogues in the north-eastern accent is astonishing to see. Not only this, she breathes so much of authenticity in her character, and how? I had loved her in ‘Fan’ and ‘Jolly LLB 2’ and with this, I am a fan! What a star you are, Sayani! Another character that had my heart was ‘Shiv’ played by Rohan Joshi who is too good at his part, too. The film is shot and edited very neatly and the aesthetics are real and organic.

There are a few glitches in the narrative and also some abrupt scenes which give you some “what was that for?”, “I didn’t get that” feels. Adil Hussain’s guest appearance was one such incomplete needless element. However, these glitches that I am talking about are minute enough and ignorable. On the whole, Axone is a must-watch film for plenty of reasons. It sows that seed that was much needed in times like these- hoping for people to understand, empathize and become better citizens and better humans! Do watch Axone no matter what. After premiering at the London and Mumbai Film Festival, it released on Netflix and is streaming since 12th June 2020.
