Section 375

Publish Date - 24th December 2021

When everyone is getting ecstatic and frenzy over Dream Girl, standing next to it under the shadow is Section 375, which in my opinion is the best film of 2019 and by far, the best courtroom-drama I have ever seen. This is the 2nd film of Ajay Bahl, the director of BA Pass which was an amazing film in itself. It is hard to believe how well he manages to showcase bold and sensitive topics so smartly and smoothly. Probably, he is the only director who could make films like these.

This film is a thrilling courtroom drama in which the case challenges the privileges which have been conferred upon women by the protective laws made for them (Section 375 of the IPC). It highlights how the same section which is made to protect women can also be mis-utilized by them. As complex it is to play with the dilemma that the law creates, the story writers and directors have managed to draft the film so neatly and cleverly that it is able to highlight the loophole in the law without taking a stand. Though the judgement in the climax is given through the law’s lens, the film is also left open-ended at the same time. Both the doors are left open and it is on the audience to decide. This movie brilliantly provokes your thoughts, educates you, opens your eyes, thrills you, and towards the end, you find yourself at the edge of the seat. Also, it has some strong and very sensible dialogues which are delivered on point.

Akshaye Khanna is spectacular. He plays the defense lawyer with ease and is so terrific to watch. This film is his, for sure. Hats off to his performance. And he is an underrated actor. I don’t understand, why?!!! The other ensemble which includes Richa Chadda, Meera Chopra, Rahul Bhat performs extraordinarily, seeping in the skin of their characters. The cinematography and editing is so crisp. The pace and duration of the movie are just so right. The writers and director need to be praised yet again for their commendable research and efforts which made them capture the details of the court and judiciary with this level of authenticity and for making this a flawless film.

Section 375 is a must, must, must watch. People should compulsorily watch this film not only for the brilliant work of art that it is, but also for the mind waking insights it gives. Was justice delivered? Is the law right? Go, find it out yourself and let me know how you liked the film.
